QUICK GUIDE TO SPEAKING AT PUBLIC MEETINGS:

You may speak both during the PUBLIC/ORAL COMMUNICATIONS section of the meeting and during a specific PUBLIC HEARING ITEMS section.

  • Speak on a specific topic
  • Request a specific action
  • You are only allowed to speak once per Agenda Item
  • The time limit is usually three minutes [see Speaker's Card]
  • They ask that you begin by stating your name and address
  • Start your speech by stating your topic and then request an action
  • Restate your action request at the end
  • Rehearse beforehand. They really will cut you off at the time limit
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes before the meeting starts
  • Fill out an orange or yellow Speaker's Card at the back table
  • Enter the either "Oral Communications" or the Public Hearing Item Number
  • Hand card to the City Clerk/Commission Secretary at the front of the room
